Just twelve months after lifting a historic twentieth Premier League title, Arne Slot has been sacked by Liverpool with immediate effect.

The club confirmed the Dutchman’s departure on Saturday afternoon with a statement, thanking him for delivering a league title at the first time of asking but confirming that 'the process to appoint a successor is under way'.

After replacing the hugely popular Jürgen Klopp two seasons ago, Slot was established himself as tactical genius who guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season.

But after an underwhelming campaign that saw Liverpool collapse from reigning champions to a fifth-place finish. Questions over Slot's future only intensified.

While Slot publicly insisted as recently as last week that he expected to remain on Merseyside next season, the reality behind closed doors was vastly different.

So what happens next? Liverpool now enter what was already expected to be a massive transitional summer with the added pressure of finding a new manager, with Bournemouth's outgoing manager Andoni Iraola already heavily tipped as a potential replacement.

The departure of Slot serves as a stark reminder of the brutal stakes at the absolute top of the game.

UPDATE: As per Fabrizio Romano, Iraola is set to become the next Liverpool manager. We will be covering what this means for Liverpool over the coming days.
