If you’re like me, you’ve spent the last few years wondering if we’d ever actually see Robert Pattinson put the cowl back on. Thankfully, the silence has finally been broken. Matt Reeves has started teasing the cast for The Batman Part II. From familiar faces to brand-new threats, here is everyone officially confirmed for the sequel so far.

When The Batman released in cinemas in 2022, it was a huge critical and commercial success. Grossing $772 million at the box office, fans immediately bought into Matt Reeves’ gritty, noir-soaked vision of Gotham. It gave us a younger, more vulnerable Bruce Wayne, played brilliantly by Robert Pattinson, as he tracked a serial killer, The Riddler (Paul Dano), who was violently murdering Gotham’s political elite to expose the city’s corrupt core.

The film was instantly hailed for bringing a fresh, detective-led energy to a character who has been on our screens for nearly a century. Between the eerie atmosphere, cinematographer Greig Fraser’s stunning, rain-drenched visuals, and one of the best car chases in comic book history, it left fans desperate for more. For a couple of years, we had to wait, but we eventually got a hell of a bridge in the HBO Max series, The Penguin.

Following Oz Cobb (a returning, unrecognisable Colin Farrell) as he attempts to rise to power as the new kingpin of Gotham, the show was a runaway success. Some critics even argued it surpassed the original film (I disagree, but would personally say it's one of the best limited series I've ever seen) and was an awards darling, with both Farrell and Cristin Milioti picking up numerous awards for their performances, with the latter giving a haunting, tragic performance as Sofia Falcone/Gigante.

However, the journey to The Batman Part II hasn't been an easy one. Initially announced to be released on October 3, 2025, the film was pushed back a year to October 2, 2026 due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes. Then in December 2024, it was announced that the film had once again been delayed to October 1, 2027. This caused fans to speculate that the film may have been quietly cancelled, especially since Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran had been brought in to become to co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studios and had already announced that Reeves' Batman films wouldn't be part of the mainline DC Universe.

Despite the online speculation, both Gunn and Reeves assured fans that the film was still going ahead. Then on July 27, 2025, just as rumours of cancellation began intensify, Reeves announced in the coldest way possible that he had finished and handed the script in for The Batman Part II.

Little is known about the story, but that hasn't stopped the cast from hyping up the film. Pattinson told Deadline that the script is 'extraordinary' and that 'it’s going to be a really, really, really special movie'. Meanwhile, Farrell said to The Hollywood Reporter that the sequel is 'deeper, scarier, the stakes are bigger'.

Now with production set to start in the coming months, Reeves has begun teasing fans about the hotly anticipated film, and has already confirmed to fans that it will be set in a snowy Gotham with a recent X post, showing the Batmobile driving on snow covered roads. Following from the tradition of the first film, he has started announcing the cast of the upcoming film with a series of GIFs on social media. With each post comes a little bit more excitement so let's look ahead at who is returning and who will be making their first trip to Gotham.

Just a heads up there will be spoilers for The Batman and The Penguin, so if you haven't watched the film or series yet, read ahead with caution.

Robert Pattinson - Batman/Bruce Wayne

Is there an actor more in demand than Pattinson? Fresh off a bubbling performance in The Drama, he is set to play the villain in two of this year's biggest films. First up he'll be playing Antinous in Christopher Nolan's epic The Odyssey and then he'll star as Scytale in Dune: Part Three.

But as massive as those blockbusters are, nothing tops the anticipation for his return to Gotham. Following legends like Michael Keaton and Christian Bale, Pattinson has made the cowl his own. He masterfully captures a Bruce Wayne who’d rather spend every waking minute beating criminals to a pulp than running a billion-dollar company. It’s a portrayal that is raw, reclusive, and, initially, almost entirely devoid of empathy. His journey from 'Vengeance' to Gotham’s protector was the heartbeat of the first film, ending with him finally becoming a symbol of hope. Seeing where Reeves takes that evolution in The Batman Part II is easily one of the most exciting prospects in cinema right now.

Jeffrey Wright - Lieutenant Gordon

While he isn't Commissioner Gordon yet (something that might happen in Part II?) the buddy cop dynamic between Batman and Gordon was a highlight of the first film, which is a testament to both Wright and Pattinson's chemistry. For most of the first film, he is Batman's only ally in Gotham and seeing them visit crime scenes and search for clues is something we hadn't really seen in great detail on the big screen.

He also has some of the best one liners in the film (Gordon screaming 'OPEN YOUR EYES' to a dazed Oz Cobb became an instant meme) and is involved some of the biggest moments, so hopefully he continues to have more memorable moments in The Batman Part II.

Andy Serkis - Alfred Pennyworth

Having been a frequent collaborator with Reeves on the Planet of the Apes films they worked on, it wasn't really a surprise that Reeves found a role for Serkis in The Batman.

While previous iterations of the character showed a loving father-son dynamic, this version is a strained relationship with hints of a tough upbringing. At the start of the movie, Bruce will take any opportunity to remind Alfred that 'he is not his dad'. However, when The Riddler sends a bomb intended for Bruce to Wayne Tower, Alfred is caught in the blast and is left hospitalised. This leads to one of the film's standout scenes where an emotional Bruce opens up to Alfred and shares his fear of losing someone he cares about again.

While Serkis has confirmed he will be joining production later than the rest of the cast due to his work on the upcoming Lord of the Rings film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, he has told Collider that the upcoming sequel is 'emotional and very powerful'.

Colin Farell - Oz Cobb/The Penguin

Fresh off leading his own show, Colin Farrell will continue to play the new kingpin of Gotham. Credit: Warner Bros

Farrell was unrecognisable under heavy prosthetics as he played Carmine Falcone's ambitious right hand man Oz Cobb. Despite having a small role, he left a lasting impact and was part of two standout scenes in the film, the brutal Iceberg Lounge fight scene and the rain-soaked car chase on a Gotham highway. After Falcone's death (and revelation he had been an informant) The Penguin series followed the titular character as he took advantage of the power vacuum left by his former boss.

The show was a monumental success, transforming Oz from a shady mid-level mobster into a despicable monster who would do anything, and kill anyone, to get what he wants. While Farrell has confirmed his role will be smaller in The Batman Part II, it'll be great to see him reprise his role. Hopefully, we see Batman beat the s*** out of him after what he did to Victor in The Penguin finale (and that still probably wasn't the worst thing he did in the show).

Jayme Lawson - Mayor Bella Real

A small, but important, character in the first film, Bella Real is the mayoral candidate up against Mayor Donavan Mitchell (before he is brutally murdered by The Riddler). Defiant against the corruption in Gotham, she is seen as someone who is fighting the same battle as Batman, just in a less violent way. She was last seen in The Penguin finale where it is revealed that she is putting together a corruption Taskforce. It will be interesting to see if the Taskforce is an ally of Batman's, or a hinderance to the vigilante.

Gil Perez-Abraham - Officer Martinez

A small character but probably serves the comic relief in an otherwise moody film, Officer Martinez idolises Bruce Wayne, but hates Batman (he constantly calls the hero a 'freak'). Imagine if he ever finds out they are the same person, how will he react?

Outside the film, the character has taken a life of its own in the way of a parody X account that shares posts about their excitement for the upcoming film (and sometimes unrealistically speculating how big a role Officer Martinez will have in the sequel).

Scarlett Johansson

Deadline first reported in December that one of the OG Avengers was swapping the MCU for a role in Reeves' gloomy Gotham. While it’s now confirmed that double-Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson has joined the cast. It is yet to be confirmed who the she will be playing, but early speculation suggest she is playing Gilda Dent, the wife of Harvey Dent.

This would certainly be a left field choice as the character is relatively unknown outside of the comics, but Reeves had previously told Josh Horowitz that the antagonist for The Batman Part II has 'never really been done in a movie before'. Having the film focus on the conflict around the psychological collapse of the Dent family, rather than just a standard 'villain of the week', fits that bill perfectly.

Attracting an actress of Johansson's stature is a major coup and shows that Reeves isn't just looking to repeat the success of the first film, but to surpass it entirely by leaning into a more complex, character-driven tragedy.

Sebastian Stan

Having played the tortured assassin Bucky Barnes (a.k.a The Winter Soldier) since 2011, Sebastian Stan has followed his Marvel co-star Johansson by signing up for The Batman Part II. Similar to Johansson, his role is yet to be confirmed, however it has been widely speculated he will be playing District Attorney Harvey Dent (if he will become his villainous alter ego Two Face by end of the film is also up in the air).

While he is best known for his role in the MCU, Stan has proved in recent time that he is a phenomenal actor. His Oscar nominated role as a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice showed he can play sleazy businessman who can charm his way to the top. While his layered performance in A Different Man shows he can brilliantly capture a character's decent into madness, something which might be shown in The Batman Part II if it explores Harvey's psychological transformation . Reeves announcement GIF certainly teases that...

Charles Dance

Could Charles Dance be the final member of the Dent family? Credit: HBO

While Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson provide the star power, the most chilling addition to the cast is arguably Charles Dance. Though the role is still under wraps, it has been widely reported that Dance is playing Christopher Dent, the father of Harvey Dent. If you know your Batman lore, you’ll know this is a dark, dark road for Reeves to take. Christopher Dent is traditionally portrayed as a physically and emotionally abusive father whose violence directly triggers Harvey’s eventual descent into the Two-Face persona.

Casting an actor known for playing ruthless, cold patriarchs like Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones is a masterstroke. It suggests that The Batman Part II isn't just about a villain terrorising the city, it’s about the generational trauma that creates monsters. If Sebastian Stan is playing a Harvey Dent who is trying to be good, having Charles Dance as the looming shadow of his father provides the perfect psychological pressure cooker. Looking at the gritty, grounded Gotham we’ve seen so far, I can’t imagine anyone better than Dance to play the man who might break Harvey Dent.

It has been reported that Zoë Kravitz won't be returning as Catwoman, which is a shame but understandable as The Batman ends with her leaving Gotham (even though The Penguin does tease her inevitable return). Meanwhile, neither Paul Dano nor Barry Keoghan have yet been confirmed to reprise their roles as The Riddler and The Joker respectively.

I'm sure there will be more casting announcements to come as production begins to ramp up. For more of the latest Batman news, or just film news in general, subscribe to The Reader for free.
